Frequently Asked Questions

(Click the questions below to expand out explanations) Who is this Benny character anyway, and how can he help me?

free_hug That’s me! I’m an electronic engineer from Ireland who did poorly in languages at school and only spoke English until I was 21. Eventually, I discovered better ways to learn and became a full-time language hacker. Since I started this blog, I’ve been featured in Forbes Magazine, The New York Times, Business Insider, and many other major publications. I was also named National Geographic Traveler of the Year in 2013. I believe language is about communicating and connecting with others. I believe the key to understanding culture is immersing yourself with the people, no matter where you do it. And I believe most people ignore the human element of languages because they focus on academics and doing everything ‘right’ instead of focusing on making communication the priority. I’m on a mission to help people learn languages as quickly as possible so they can travel, connect, make friends, build deeper connections, and learn more about other cultures with greater confidence. If you want to speak another language quickly, I’m here to help you.
What if I'm not good at learning new languages? I've tried before, and it didn't work
When I was in school, I felt that I wasn’t good at languages, either. I had heard that you can’t learn another language after a certain age, and that I’d be doomed to grow up only speaking English, and was starting to believe it. After I got a degree in engineering, and even after several months abroad in Spain, I only barely spoke Spanish. I was 21 years old then. Luckily, I decided to just stop speaking English, to force myself to speak the language I wanted to learn. Eventually, I found better ways to learn and became a full time language hacker… but it all started when I made the decision to speak right away, instead of waiting for the “right” time. My point is, I’m not a genius, I wasn’t born with a special “gift,” I only knew English growing up, I did poorly in languages in school, and I never got a language degree – and yet I can speak eleven languages now, from comfortable conversational level to professional fluency. You don’t need to have “the language gene” either, or buy expensive software or have started learning another language when you were really young. There is no language-learning gene, but you do need two things: dedication and the right system. Learning a language is hard work, but a system that works – for me at least – lays the groundwork to improve quickly, helps overcome fears (failure, embarrassment, etc.), and avoids boredom and impractical, classroom-only learning. If you’re like thousands of Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM members, then I believe the system I’ve used and improved on for almost a decade will help – in fact, I guarantee it.
What is the number one secret for learning a language quickly?
As much as large companies may try to sell you one, there will never be a magic pill, easy button or ‘quick fix’ to learning a language. But there is one secret that will dramatically speed up your language learning, as long as you are willing to accept that a LOT of work will be involved: Speak the language immediately. Don’t wait to get started. Don’t bury your head in grammar books. Don’t worry about how bad you are at memorizing lots of words. Focus on communication. Fellow language hackers applying efficient immersion (either in the country, or virtually via the Internet) start with the mindset of “speak the language from day one.” No classrooms. No tests. We focus purely on using language as a tool to connect with other people. This focus on communication, not academics, is why language hackers progress so quickly. Because they are using the language every day… they’re not quietly sitting behind a computer trying to memorize every word and grammar rule before daring to use it in front of another human being… then losing heart and confidence when book learning and rote memorization haven’t prepared them for real-world communication.
This page looks different. What happened to the original Speak from Day 1 + Language Hacking Guide?
I’ve updated it to be so much better. Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM is my new package offer. It includes the original Language Hacking Guide and Speak from Day One package… but also so much more. Most of the new materials are high-quality videos of me showing you exactly how I use the apps, websites and other resources to learn my languages so quickly. These have been highly requested,so here they are. You can think of this as a massive upgrade.
Okay... so what exactly is Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM?
The Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM package is a culmination of over a decade of traveling the world, visiting dozens of different countries, and speaking 8 different languages fluently, and several others conversationally. It guides you through the exact processes I’ve personally used to learn multiple languages quickly and effectively… in many cases without even needing to travel to other countries, and especially not spending countless boring hours reciting words to a computer. It’s also the system I used to become conversational in Mandarin in just a few months. (See the ‘In Action’ page to watch me speak this and other languages genuinely with natives). The package is a multimedia expansion pack that includes the best video and multimedia content I have ever created. This new premium content will show you, not just tell you, my process and language hacking techniques. I’ll be bringing you into my home, into my laptop, and into my smartphone to show you the tools, tips and tricks I use, and to guide you through the process of becoming a language hacker yourself. The Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM package doesn’t teach you how to learn a specific language, so it’s not a replacement for language courses. Instead, it’s the framework many language hackers are using to QUICKLY learn languages and it gives you the free (or very cheap) tools you need to learn effectively, often without courses. It highlights the mental roadblocks that keep most people from learning a language and gives you specific learning ‘hacks’ to learn faster and more effectively. Here are a few things you’ll learn:

  • How I use specific websites, apps, and other technologies to hack languages quickly
  • How I break up my time during a 3 month project, and what I do during each stage of the process
  • How other polyglots learn languages quickly and remember them forever
  • How to get over the fear of screwing up and looking like an idiot in front of others (and what to do if you’re shy)
  • How you can learn a language, even if you haven’t been successful in the past
  • How to find native speakers who will help you learn the language quickly without needing to buy a plane ticket
  • The ‘conversation connectors’ I use to meet and make friends with locals in their own language right from the start.
  • How to keep yourself from burning out on your goal of becoming fluent (like most people do)
  • A series of learning hacks that will improve your memory through word association, using music to remember phrases and other cool strategies.
  • Plus much more…

When you invest in the Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM Package, you get everything I know about learning languages. Included is a “Speak from Day One” video series that shows you strategies from my Language Hacking Guide in action – like what to do when you lose your confidence, or can’t think of something to say with a native in front of you. This concise, eight-part HD video series walks you through your first few conversations, helps you overcome nervousness, and presents the steps you need to quickly get started. I spent months planning these videos for you, including flying a native Spanish speaker across the world for the video shoot, investing in high definition video gear, and hiring someone to record and edit the video. On top of that, you’ll get the 32,000 word Language Hacking Guide. This guide took me two months, full-time, to write. The Language Hacking Guide also includes worksheets and ‘conversation connectors’ to meet other people speaking the language, and everything comes in multiple file formats (PDF, MOBI, ePub, and more) so you can read it on any e-reader or computer. As an added bonus, I’ve translated the guide into 24 different languages, too. Thanks to a team of over 50 multilingual translators and proofreaders, the multilingual Language Hacking Guide comes in 24 languagesso you can read English (or another native language) and your target language side-by-side from day one. No dictionary required. Included are: English, Spanish, French, German, Polish, Portuguese, Italian, Greek, Hungarian, Russian, Hebrew, Hindi, Irish, Dutch, Vietnamese, Czech, Chinese, Arabic, Korean, Japanese, Tagalog, Turkish, Romanian and Esperanto. You also get the entire guide recorded in English by me as a series of 42 different MP3s so you can throw these on your MP3 player or phone and listen to everything while you’re driving or working out. When you download the package, you’ll also get three hours of interviews I’ve recorded with some of the Internet’s best-known language learners and polyglots. As I travel more and learn more languages, I’ll be updating the Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM repository to make it even more effective and to respond to your needs. You’ll get these updates and additional videos for life, free of charge. Pretty cool, eh?

What's the difference between Fi3m PLUS and PREMIUM?
Fluent in 3 Months PLUS is an extension of my new book–totally free for book owners–that provides updates on the book’s content, expands on some of it’s topics, and suggests additional resources for language learners. It’s an excellent resource. Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM members have access to an unlocked version of the PLUS website that includes dozens more videos, interviews, guides, podcasts, and other resources. You can access everything on the PLUS page, as well as much more. And you don’t have to own the book :)
What makes Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM so special?
Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM isn’t the ONLY way to learn a language. And it isn’t for people who want to start with grammar or textbooks. It’s simply the best system I’ve discovered to become conversationally fluent in the language as quickly as possible and be better prepared to go beyond that to professional fluency. And it comes with dozens of additional videos of me guiding you through my exact process of learning  a language. You see, many classroom courses I’ve studied start with grammar, punctuation, and getting things exactly right. This perfectionist mentality requires years of your time to make any significant progress with a language. But the truth is, to become fluent in any language quicker, you have to make mistakes over and over and abandon perfectionism so that you can focus on using the language to interact with real people. We learn best by making mistakes. If you don’t practice speaking, you’ll never make any progress in becoming fluent… no matter how much time you spend studying. Most courses start with loads of memorization and rules about grammar. From day one, people are bored out of their minds. There’s no fun. No energy. No excitement. And no way they can have conversations with other people and actually enjoy learning. Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM focuses on SPEAKING from day one and how you can do it. In the HD video series, you’ll get help with the mental aspects of learning a language, like getting over confidence issues and how to react when you can’t think of specific words. And the included Language Hacking Guide will give you the in-depth, proven system I’ve used to acquire languages… not easily, but much faster and smarter than when I struggled using conventional methods. This is a completely different side of language learning. And, best of all, you’re getting the information straight from the source… from someone who spent a decade learning from countless mistakes and went from only speaking English to being fluent in eight languages.
How much does Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM cost?
I’ve invested thousands of euros/dollars in private language tutors, expensive software, books, apps, travel expenses, and classes. Sadly, none of these teach the framework language hackers need to use to learn new languages quickly – and most classes or software are one-size-fits-all and encourage you to wait to speak… and they’ll cost you anything from $300 to thousands of dollars each. In contrast, this package gives you the tools you need to actually start using your language… professionally-made Video Tutorials, specific instructions on how to harness the power of Apps and other technologies, the Speak from Day One video series shot in HD, the 32,000-word Language Hacking Guide translated into 24 languages and read aloud (MP3 format), and three hours of interviews with the Internet’s best-known language learners and polyglots, all for only $97.
Can’t I get this information for free online or through your blog?
My blog is jam-packed with tons of free content that hundreds of thousands of people all over the world use each month to get inspired to become fluent faster. But the most powerful, cutting-edge content is in my Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM Package. As far as the rest of the Internet goes, I haven’t scoured the ENTIRE Internet… but, from what I’ve researched, I’ve never seen a blog, a forum or even a course that covers what I do. Nothing I’ve seen focuses on the human element of learning languages and too many people ignore the most important questions: How do I get over my fear of speaking the language? How can I be confident when I don’t know all the words? Where do I find people to practice speaking the language? How to I interact with locals when I’m still learning the language? What specific techniques can help me memorize vocabulary faster? What resources can I use to learn the components of a language, and how can I find native speakers without travelling so that I can get started on practicing with them now? When I do travel, how can I enhance that experience so that I definitely learn to speak the language as best as possible? The answers to these questions (and many more) are crucial to becoming fluent in a new language quickly. And sadly, most courses ignore them. My blog is huge, and randomly changes between travel anecdotes, language learning tips, and video uploads of me speaking the language and learning about local culture. You can find some parts of this package sprinkled across the blog in various forms, but it’s mostly there to show how it all works in practice. You can’t realistically read my blog from start to finish. However, you do get all the most actionable and best advice in this package.
How long will it take me to speak the language at a fluent level?
Everyone has different levels of passion for languages, so they learn at different rates. I personally make learning the language my top priority and as such I feel that three months can be a good time frame for me to attempt to reach fluency. Follow my blog from September to see me attempt it with a new language, in the wrong country! But everyone is different, so before you internalize some key learning strategies, it may take you longer even if you are fully devoted. But the point is: it does not have to take years to become a fluent. I do want to be clear on one thing: this is NOT a magic bullet product. Like everything worth pursuing, it will take effort on your part. A lot of effort. Many courses claim to offer the “easy” way to learn a language – which is easier to sell, but also dishonest. What I’m proposing is far from that. Putting yourself out there and making mistakes is hard work and can be exhausting… but finding a system that works for you can at least make it easier and more enjoyable. If you’re like me, the rewards of becoming fluent quickly are worth the hard work… especially because you’ll score your first victory the minute you speak to someone, instead of waiting years to actually put your new language to use.
What if I don't have enough time to learn a language?
Learning a language does take lots of time and practice – but these can be shortened and made more effective. The real question is, do you want to make learning another language a priority? If so, I think I can help. I run a blog with more than 300,000 monthly readers, create detailed posts (sometimes up to 8,000 words long!), produce professionally edited video updates, manage the business side of my career, respond to or process over 400 emails a day, and meet new people constantly… all while learning several languages a year. As someone who grew up speaking only English and did poorly in high school and college language classes, I can tell you, I didn’t become successful because of any natural talent or because I won the lottery and could take all day off to study the language. I became successful at learning languages because I worked hard on the right things – speaking as soon as possible, and finding a system that works for me. It isn’t easy, and it definitely takes a lot of time… but if you are ready to accelerate your language learning, I’ll share some of the strategies and tricks I use to fit language learning into my schedule. Hopefully, that system can help you too. After all, we all have the same 24 hours in a day – the secret is using them more efficiently.
Is this one of those scammy internet things? A crappy ebook? A marketing gimmick?
No. But of course that’s easy for me to say. ☺ Instead, I think you should be the judge… so check out additional videos and testimonials on this site. And remember, you have 30 days to make sure Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM works for you or to take advantage of my unconditional money-back guarantee. Check out the ‘In Action’ page and you’ll see me lecturing at the TEDx conference in San Antonio, a viral video of me speaking eight different languages, and numerous testimonials from happy customers. I built this product because I love how much learning languages has enhanced my life and because I think it’s a tragedy that most people hide in a classroom and ignore the most rewarding and effective way to start learning a language… which is speaking with other people. This isn’t just another ‘ebook’ or ‘information product.’ It’s the results of thousands of hours of hard work by me, a video editing crew, over 50 translators and proofreaders, and my polyglot friends across the world. In short, it’s everything I’ve learned from almost a decade of immersing myself in cultures. Everything I’ve learned from being able to speak ten languages to varying degrees (eight fluently). And everything I’ve learned from helping thousands of language hackers across the world to do the same. Too many people want to learn a language but use the wrong system, fail, and give up… all without knowing how effectively they can learn by immersion. That is why I built the Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM Package.
Why should I trust you?
Aside from my TEDx talk, testimonials on this site, and my 100% 30-day money-back guarantee… you should trust me because I started out just like you – or maybe even worse off. I grew up speaking only one language, English, and I struggled to learn other languages in school. Finally, when I was 21, I found way to system that worked for me, and since then, I’ve learned eight other languages. I don’t believe there is a cut-off age to learning languages – because I started learning “too late” and succeeded. I don’t believe you must master grammar or tenses before practicing a language – because I don’t. I also don’t believe in hiding anonymously behind a website or offering advice without proving that I’m practicing what I preach – because I wouldn’t trust anyone who did that either. I believe in openly and honestly sharing myself with the world. The good and the bad. The ups and the downs. You’ll see my successful as well as my not-so-successful language learning experiments on my blog. This openness and transparency are why over a quarter of a million people from all over the world read my blog every month. And I’m constantly posting fresh content, new videos, and updates on the languages I’m learning. If you’d like to see how I’ve used this system to talk to native speakers in unrehearsed situations, see videos of me speaking at TEDx, or read testimonials from people like you who’ve used Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM and loved it, check out the ‘In Action’ page.
Will this actually work for ME?
Maybe. This course isn’t for everyone. It’s not for people who want to meticulously memorize words, obsess over grammar, and focus on learning a language just to pass academic tests. If you’re trying to get an A in your Spanish class, this isn’t for you. Fluent in 3 Months PREMIUM is built for the people who want to USE their target language now – not in a few years. It’s for the people who want to eventually travel to another country and have the confidence to make friends with the locals, who want to immerse themselves in a culture, and who want to connect with friends, family, or coworkers on a deeper level. It’s also for people who are not traveling, but still want to actively and effectively use their language wherever they are. Bottom line is this: If you want to learn a language to take a test, write perfectly, or pass a class, this is NOT your answer. If you want to learn a language because you want to interact and have fun with others, the advice in this package may be the fastest way to help you to do so.
What is the number one reason I should sign up right now?
I’ve seen people put off learning a language their entire life. They say ‘Oh, I’ll get around to it sometime.’ But they never do because life gets in the way. A true language hacker doesn’t wait around for his or her life to start. Language hackers know they’re not getting any younger, and they don’t want to regret not taking action. That’s why they’re learning a new language right now. If you’re ready to draw a line in the sand, stop waiting around and start speaking your next language now, there’s no better time to do it. There are seven days in a week. “Someday” isn’t one of them.
